 Sihanouk
Ville town sits in the
center of a small peninsula that juts into the Gulf of
Thailand. surrounded on three sides by beaches with the
downtown area near the center of the peninsula.
Most hotels are
concentrated into three areas: downtown, the Ochheuteal area and Victory Hill. Downtown is a 5-minute ride from the
beaches. Ochheuteal / Serendipity are the most popular
beaches in town, and the busiest. On the opposite side of
town, Victory Hill is popular with budget travelers and now
has some mid-range choices too. The nearby tropical islands
are wonderfully undeveloped and most offer basic
accommodation, rustic beach bungalows and the like
On average, guesthouses
run $3-$20, mid-range places $35-$85 and the few upscale
resorts $120+. Budget rule of thumb: expect to spend a
minimum $5 for a fan room and $10 for a/c. Better rates
available for long term stay.
The
Ochheuteal/Serendipity Beaches
are the most popular beaches in town with dozens of hotel
and guesthouses on and near the beach. Otres Beach is
far less developed and a bit more difficult to reach,
offering a more leisurely, untouristed, relaxed atmosphere.
Located on the opposite side of town from Ochheuteal Beach,
Victory Hill
sits above Victory Beach and has long been popular with
budget travelers. Several budget guesthouses, bungalows,
restaurants and bars dot the Hill, particularly on the beach
side. There’s a booming nightlife on the top of the Hill
these days, with several bars and clubs staying open into
the wee hours.

Ochheuteal/Serendipity Beaches Area

Ochheuteal Beach is by far the most
touristed in town. The beach is long, sandy and narrow, with
‘Serendipity Beach’ at the arcing northern end, a development
project in the middle and a cluster of hotels, guesthouses and

Otres Beach is the next beach south of
Ochheuteal and similar in many ways - a three kilometer crescent of
white sand facing the southwest. But Otres is far less developed and
a bit more difficult to reach, offering a more leisurely,
untouristed, relaxed atmosphere. Beach shack restaurants and a few
guesthouses and bungalows line the near and far ends of the beach
with a development project taking up the central portion - no
businesses but still open to beach-goers. At the near end of the
beach a dozen or so beachshack-style bars and restaurants stretch
along a kilometer of sand. There are also a few
guesthouses/bungalows on the beachfront road 20 meters from the
water. The secluded far end of Otres on the other side of the
development area also has a few beachbars and accommodations along
the sand and even up the river.

Independence Beach Area
Independence Beach is more than a
kilometer long, but the sandy area is a bit narrow, making the beach
best when the tide is lower...if it was open. Due to a development
project, most of Independence Beach has been closed to the public.
Only small sections of beach at the north and south ends remain
open. At the southern end of the beach, near Sasha Guesthouse,
a small slice of beach is open, offering a quiet, lightly touristed
corner of sand with just a few drink and seafood snack vendors
cluster together under the trees. At the northern end, the beach is
accessible from Independence Hotel, which sits on the
headland overlooking the ocean.

The Islands

Most of the nearby tropical islands are
undeveloped and deserted except for the stray fishing camp or small
village. Picturesque, sandy beaches ring many of the islands, and
some islands have nearby snorkeling and diving waters.
Most of the available island accommodations are quite rustic - wood
and thatch beach bungalows and basic rooms set on or near a secluded
tropical beach. The accommodation will either provide or arrange
boat transportation to the island for guests. It is a unique time to
stay on one of the islands of Sihanoukville, offering a Robinson
Crusoe ambiance that will no doubt be lost to development in the
