Choices for transportation to provincial destinations
include: air travel, bus, ferry, taxi and pickup truck (in descending
order of desirability). The
Phnom Penh Sorya Transport
bus station is near the southwest corner of the Central Market (Phsar
Thmey). Tonle Sap and Mekong river ferries depart the Port of Phnom Penh
on Sisowath Quay. Most taxis, trucks, vans and buses leave from the
Central Market. The trains station is at Monivong and Street 108.
Battambang (291km. Good road) Pleasant provincial town. Beautiful
old French colonial architecture. Nearby Angkorian-era ruins.

Bus: From the Phnom Penh Public Transport bus station near the Central
Market, three times per day. 14,000 riel.
Taxi: NW corner of Central Market. 4-6 hours. Shared: 25,000R. Private:
$45. 4-5 hours.
Pick-up truck: NW corner of Central Market. 8000R in the bed, 15,000R in
the cab, 4-6 hours.
Train: Departs 6:00 AM. 12,500R, 12 hours. Saturday only.
Ferry: From Siem Reap only. Departs 7:00 AM. $15, 3 hrs.

10th century ruins and interesting pagodas nearby. Easy access from
Phnom Penh.

Kampot/Kep (148km/175km. Good road.) Small beaches and great
seafood in the old seaside resort area of Kep. Access to Bokor Hill
Station from Kampot.

Koh Kong (271km) Border town. One of two official crossings from
Thailand. Casino. Fishing community.
Ferry: Daily from/to Sihanoukville. Departs 7AM from Koh Kong. Noon from
Sihanoukville. $16.
Road: Route 48 from Route 4 near Sihanoukville to Koh Kong is now open.
6 hours from Sihanoukville.
Kratie (340km) is a provincial backwater described by Ray Zepp as
‘near the end of the world’.
Bus: From the Phnom Penh Public Transport bus station near the Central
Market. 18,000 riel, 7 hours. Once per day.
Mondulkiri (Sen Monorom) (543km) One of the least developed parts
of Cambodia. Hill tribe culture. Jungle.
Air: Flights temporarily suspended
Road: Bus from Phnom Penh to Sen Monorom, $10, 9.5 hours. Hua Lian
Transportation Co. (012-376807).
Neak Luong (Prey Veng province) The town where Rte #1 meets the
Mekong River. Departure point for ferry to Chau Doc.
Shared taxi: 7000R to Neak Luong. 10,000R to Prey Veng City.
Poipet Major border crossing from Thailand. Primary border
crossing for those traveling from Bangkok to Siem Reap. Several casinos
located near the border.
Road: From Siem Reap: About 20,000R. From Phnom Penh: Taxi: 40,000R,
Pickup: 20,000R. Rough road between Siem Reap and Sisophon.
Rattanakiri (Banlung) (636km) Culturally quite different than
most of Cambodia. Jungle. Ethnic minorities. Crater lake.
Air: PMT Air, 4 times per week.
